We are hearing about peptides EVERYWHERE right now. Especially if you’re part of the fitness, physique, bodybuilding, or lifestyle athlete scene - you’ve heard the buzz around peptides.
Let’s unpack the foundational information you need to know so you can understand the hype and navigate decision-making around this topic.
High Level, What Peptides Are
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signaling molecules in the body. Unlike anabolic steroids or hormones themselves, peptides generally work by communicating with existing systems. They tell the body to up- or down-regulate certain processes like tissue repair, inflammation, or appetite signaling.
That distinction matters… but it also gets misunderstood.
Facts vs. Fiction
✅ Fact: Some peptides are used clinically and researched for specific medical purposes under physician supervision.
❌ Fiction: “All peptides are natural, safe, and competition-friendly.”
✅ Fact: Peptides are showing up more frequently in physique and wellness conversations because women are looking for recovery support, injury resilience, body composition optimization, and longevity. This is not simply fat loss at any cost.
❌ Fiction: “If it’s a peptide, it must be legal or undetectable.” This is where things can get dicey, keep reading.
Peptides in Competition vs. Lifestyle Contexts
In physique sports, peptides exist in a gray zone that varies by federation. Some fall under banned substance lists, others don’t—but that doesn’t automatically make them appropriate, ethical, or risk-free. “Everyone’s doing it” is not a sound decision-making framework.
In lifestyle and wellness spaces, peptides are often marketed as a shortcut to recovery, fat loss, or hormonal balance. The reality is more nuanced. Without proper medical oversight, lab work, and context, peptides can be misunderstood, misused, or over-relied on, or improperly strategized. This is especially true for women already juggling stress, training demands, and restrictive nutrition phases.
Natural Federations & WADA-Aligned Federations (Global Standard)
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) publishes an annual Prohibited List that many international federations reference for drug testing.
“Peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics” are explicitly banned under category S2 on the WADA list. This means many peptides used to signal hormone release or growth are not allowed in competitive sport.
OCBOnline.com: "All OCB competitors must be drug-free and fully compliant with the WADA Anti-Doping Code for a minimum of seven (7) years prior to competition." - see WADA prohibited list above.
World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) explicitly states that “synthetic peptides used for any purpose are banned for use” in competition.
NPC/IFBB natural contest guidelines state, “peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances, and mimetics” (3 years free).
The Bigger Issue: Critical Thinking
The most important takeaway isn’t whether peptides are “good” or “bad.” An athletes decision to leverage peptides - or any enhancement is a matter of their goals, personal code of conduct, and risk tolerance.
The concern is that - Most women are missing clear, unbiased education on how to think about peptides. Not just whether to use them.
What questions should you be asking? What claims are backed by evidence vs. anecdote? How do anti-doping rules, health considerations, and long-term goals intersect?
That’s the gap we’re trying to close.
Continuing the Conversation
To go deeper, I’ll be recording a long-form educational webinar with our trusted subject matter expert, Austin Kjergaard - The Physique RD. We'll break down:
What peptides are (and aren’t)
Why they’re gaining traction in physique and wellness spaces
Where athletes commonly get confused
How to evaluate information critically (no fear-mongering, no hype)
The webinar, Peptides for Performance, is intended for general education only; this is not individualized advice or recommendations.
If peptides are something you’re curious about, skeptical of, or simply trying to understand in the context of your physique goals, this conversation will give you a clearer framework for informed decisions and the vocabulary needed to navigate the conversation.
